Noticed.

"We suffer," - Marcelino January, resident in Bellville South.

The usually quiet community of Bellville South in Cape Town, Western Cape, joined the widespread protests today as the Gatvol Captonian, a self-described pressure group, called on colored communities to stand together in their ongoing plea for proper housing.

"You guys, please stand down, we have proved our point. We had our peaceful protest. We disrupted them. It is bloody cold thank you."

In a video sent early on Monday morning, Fadiel Adams, a prominent leader of the Gatvol Capetonian, asked communities to stand down, calling the planned Shutdown for Monday, 27 July, to a stop. According to Adams, they have proved their point.

However, residents were already taking to the streets, and disruptions across Cape Town continued, causing already limited police, law enforcers, and metro police, to maintain law and order.

According to residents, since the national lockdown came into effect in March this year, they have never received any food parcels. Pensioners give the little money they receive to provide soup for people. Those who work, are left to help others, says another resident.

According to a community member, there are a lot of people who have degrees, but they are unemployed. And while this community is closely bordered to various industrial units, residents say people from surrounding areas work there, and not them.

"We don’t want violence. We are not violent people. This is a quiet place" says Marcelino.

Two people got arrested in Binne Crescent after they threw stones at the police. One resident attributes it to mixed emotions, causing the situation to escalate.

"The main thing is; notice us. Plain and simple," says Marcelino.
